Privacy Policy
This policy describes what data FartNet collects, why we collect it, and how we protect it.
Effective: July 5, 2026
1. Overview
FartNet is a location-based comedy social app. You record short audio clips (farts), post them at a geographic location, and other users nearby can hear them. This policy explains what personal data flows through the app and what happens to it.
FartNet is operated by a single individual developer (not a company). By using the app you agree to this policy. If you don't agree, you can delete the app and your account at any time (see Section 9).
2. Data we collect
You give us directly
- Account info — email address, chosen username, date of birth (used to enforce the 18+ age minimum), gender, interests
- Profile — avatar image (either uploaded or auto-generated), bio, sniff radius preference
- Content — audio recordings you post, optional text descriptions, likes and comments on other users' farts
- Friends & chat — friend requests, direct messages (only visible to sender/recipient/us), block list
Automatically collected
- Location — GPS coordinates fuzzed to ~1km precision, used when you post a fart or view Discover (see Section 4)
- Device info — iOS version, device model, unique device identifier (via Firebase — used for crash reports and push notifications)
- Usage patterns — which screens you open, how long you spend, features you use (via Firebase Analytics)
- Push notification token — issued by Apple, stored so we can send you proximity or friend-fart pings
What we DON'T collect
- Real name (unless you put it in your bio)
- Phone number (Firebase auth handles this without exposing it to us)
- Contacts, address book, calendar
- Photos other than the avatar you specifically pick
- Payment card details (handled by Apple / Stripe — see Section 6)
3. How we use your data
- To make the app work — showing you farts near your location, matching friends, delivering push notifications
- To moderate content — reports, blocks, and admin review of flagged posts
- To track streaks, level up your profile, unlock badges
- To send you password reset emails or other transactional messages (never marketing)
- To improve the app — bug reports, crash analytics, usage patterns
- To comply with legal requirements when required by court order or law enforcement
We do not sell your personal data. We do not use your data to train AI models. We do not run advertising in FartNet.
4. Location data
Location is core to how FartNet works, so it deserves its own section.
- Location is only accessed while the app is in use (foreground). We don't track you in the background.
- Coordinates are fuzzed to roughly 1km precision before we store them. Nobody can see your exact address.
- You can revoke location permission at any time in iOS Settings → Privacy → Location Services → FartNet. The app still runs; the Discover and hotspot features just won't work.
- You can pick your own sniff radius (how far you'd like to sniff) in your profile settings.
- The app does not access your location when it's closed.
5. Audio recordings
- Recordings are up to 10 seconds long and are stored on Firebase Storage.
- By default, farts expire (self-delete) after 72 hours unless you lock them.
- Locking a fart (via 1 FartCoin) preserves it forever.
- You may report or block content, and any user's recording can be deleted at their request.
- We do not use audio recordings for voice recognition, machine learning, or any purpose other than playback within the app.
6. In-app purchases & payments
FartCoin purchases — handled entirely by Apple's App Store In-App Purchase system. We receive a purchase receipt from Apple and verify it server-side to credit your account. We do not see or store your credit card details.
Marketplace (when live) — buying and selling farts with real money will be handled by Stripe. When you sell farts, you'll go through a Stripe Connect verification process, which collects tax and banking info directly by Stripe (not by us). Sales are subject to Stripe's own privacy policy.
FartNet takes a 10% platform fee on marketplace sales. All sales are final; refunds are handled per Apple / Stripe policy for chargebacks.
7. Third parties we share with
- Firebase (Google) — authentication, database, file storage, push notifications, crash analytics. Data is stored on Google Cloud.
- Apple — App Store purchases, push notification delivery, TestFlight beta distribution.
- Stripe — marketplace payment processing (when marketplace launches).
- Cloudflare — DNS and hosting for this website (fart-net.com). Cloudflare may log IP addresses of visitors.
- Law enforcement — only when we receive a valid legal request (subpoena, court order, or similar).
We do not share your data with advertisers, data brokers, or marketing platforms.
8. How long we keep data
- Account and profile data: until you delete your account.
- Farts: 72 hours by default; forever if you lock them; deleted when you delete your account.
- Chat messages: preserved as long as the other party keeps them (they belong to both parties).
- Purchase records: kept as required by tax and accounting rules (typically 7 years for US tax purposes) — anonymized after your account is deleted.
- Backup snapshots: kept up to 30 days after account deletion, then permanently purged.
9. Your rights & account deletion
You can do all of these directly from within the app:
- Access — Settings shows all your public profile data. Contact us for a full export.
- Correct — edit your bio, avatar, interests, sniff radius any time in Profile.
- Delete — Settings → scroll to the bottom → Delete my account. This is permanent and removes farts, listings, friend connections, chat participation, and profile. Some records (purchases, chat messages the other party still holds, moderation reports) are preserved in anonymized form for legal or platform-integrity reasons.
- Object to processing — email us; we'll accommodate valid requests.
- Complain to a regulator — EU users can file with their national data protection authority; California users have rights under CCPA/CPRA.
10. Children
FartNet is 18+ only. If you're under 18, you may not use the app. The signup flow requires you to enter your date of birth and blocks anyone under 18. If we learn that an account is under 18, we delete it. If you're a parent and believe your child is using the app, email us and we'll investigate immediately.
11. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy — for example, when we add features or change how third parties process data. Material changes will be announced inside the app before they take effect. Continued use of FartNet after changes means you accept the updated policy.
